Appearance:
The Bolivar Soberano, which means sovereign or ruler, has a very dark brown wrapper, common shade for the Limited Edition cigars. It has a slightly rustic appearance, but it is not detrimental to the overall look of the cigar. In addition to the usual Bolivar band, the Soberano has a secondary 2018 Limited Edition band.
Smoking Notes:
Before lighting up
The cold draw is good, with the right amount of resistance.
Burn/ Draw
Once we put the foot to flame, the cigar releases generous amount of smoke and the first flavor that comes to the tongue and the nose is a pepper taste. It is quite powerful right from the get-go, it is not a light cigar for sure.
Initial third:
Over the first third, the main noticeable flavors are cocoa, coffee beans, chocolate, toasty notes and still a bit of pepper. However, it is evidently still a young cigar, there are few notes of ammonia here and there, which is not surprising for a cigar released in early 2019 even if it is rolled with aged leaves (as it is the case for every Limited Editions Habanos). The flavors are rich and this young cigar already shows lots of potential. The strength is already at a medium-full level. The draw is good, however the burn gets a bit wavy but then self corrects. It is a typical Bolivar up to this point, but more like a Bolivar Royal Coronas on steroids.
Middle third:
In the second third, the flavor profile remains similar but the cigar is now more powerful. The strength is now at a full level. In terms of flavors, there is still plenty of chocolate, some spice and now more creaminess and a bit of sweetness. The construction is still very good overall, the draw remains great with only a couple of touch ups required.
Final third:
In the final third, the cigar evolves very little, which is still a sign of its young age, while the power increases a little bit more. It remains a great cigar with a true Bolivar and a true Limited Edition flavor profile.
Overall, a powerful but very flavorful Edicion Limitada with a lot of potential.
Smoking time: 1 hour – 1 hour 30 minutes
