This is cigar is hand-rolled by La Casa Del Habanos for H Upmann, and is using only long filler and tobacco leaves from the Vuelta Abajo zone in the Pinar del Rio region in Cuba. The cigar has a beautiful construction, smokes very well. Not a very strong cigar, nor very complex, it is medium bodied, and offers great Cuban flavors: coffee, earth, hay and lots of cedar. The Hoyo de San Juan from Hoyo de Monterrey is a tasty Habano, of Geniales format, of 54 ring gauge and 5.9” (150mm) long and comes in a 10 cigars cabinet. Released at the 2014 Habanos Festival, this big ring gauge cigar is reminiscent of the old brand, but with a modern twist that appeal to many big ring gauges aficionados. It sports a new band which reads “Serie Le Hoyo” but as any Hoyo de Monterrey, it is hand rolled only using tobacco from San Juan y Martínez district, where the brand was born in 1865. The Hoyo du Maire is part of Le Hoyo Series and is of Small Panetela/Entreactos format, 30 ring gauge and 3.9 inches (100mm) in length. This cigar is part of the Le Hoyo series, a special series made for a Swiss distributor in the years 1940's and, as the cigars from this series, is pretty different than other Hoyo de Monterrey. The Hoyo du Maire, is a medium to full flavored cigar, with tobacco and wood as main flavors. There are also lots of toasted aromas, and notes of leather, cream and a bit of tea notes. Despite being a pretty short smoke, not more than half an hour, but still manages to provide the typical Cuban "twang" with a lot of complexity, while never being over powerful.
