Established in 1865 by José Gener in the Vuelta Abajo region, Hoyo de Monterrey (“Valley of Monterrey” in Spanish) refers to the typical geography of the farmland used for the premium tobacco plantations. There is also a Hondurian Hoyo de Monterrey cigar brand that was started after the Cuban revolution. However, the original brand is Cuban Hoyo de Monterrey that is mentioned here.
The Hoyo de Monterrey brand is known to roll excellent quality mild-medium cigars in various sizes, the most famous being the Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure No.2, the Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure De Luxe and the Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure Especial.
Around the middle of the 20th century, the Le Hoyo series was launched for a Swiss distributor, A. Dürr Co, and these cigars are generally stronger than the regular Hoyos.

The Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure de Luxe LCDH is a light yet rich Magico, 4.5” (115mm) long, of 52 ring gauge, and comes in a 10 cigars box. In 2012 Hoyo de Monterrey, one of the oldest Habanos brand, decided to launch an exclusive line for La casa del Habano, and released the Epicure de Luxe. It is only using tobacco from the most valuable area in Cuba, the famous Vuelta Abajo. This smoke packs all the typical Hoyo de Monterrey’s flavours into a small yet exclusive cigar, that is comparable to the 2012 Limited Editions, but which is cheaper than these. The construction is superb, it is fully handmade, its high level of quality is on par with any cigar out of La Casa del Habanos. On the flavor profile, it is rather light in taste yet shows a great level of complexity and control of aromas. The Hoyo de Monterrey Hoyo Du Prince is a sweet and mild Corona, 5.1” (130mm) long, of 40 ring gauge, and comes in a 25 cigars box. The Le Hoyo Series was created apart from the Hoyo de Monterrey line, this explains the difference in names and shapes of the cigars. The Le Hoyo cigars are thinner and they are slightly stronger than the regular Hoyo de Monterrey. The Hoyo du Prince hovers around a mild to medium, which main aromas are of wood, earth and leather. There is a lot of sweetness in the aromas, lots of creaminess, some honey, some nuts, and some fruit notes also add to the richness. The spices are also always present, but never too strongly, just a tingle on the lips. Overall a mild and rich cigar, perfect for a morning cigar. Pretty affordable.
