Appearance:
Like the other new releases from Quai D’Orsay, the No.54 is banded with its unique band, the revamped golden and yellow Quai D’Orsay band, which is shiny and looks very elegant. The cigar itself looks very good, very modern. Very few apparent veins, the cigar is smooth to the touch. The wrapper is simply beautiful, it is a nice colorado, light brown, with a nice sheen to it, the triple cap looks perfect. Overall, an impeccable and elegant cigar. It is flexible when squeezed, but without any soft spots, it is packed evenly all the way.
Smoking Notes:
Before lighting up
At cold, some scents of Cedar emanate from the No.54. There is also a dominant tobacco smell and some hints of bread. Some woodiness with traces of pepper.
Burn/ Draw
The draw is very good right from the get-go. Once the cigar lit, woody flavors reach the palate, and a copious amount of creamy smoke already emanates from each puff.
Initial third:
The No.54 starts off with light flavors, but they are slowly becoming more noticeable as the cigar goes. The main flavors are cedar wood, and vanilla. In the background, some bread kind of flavor, some roasted flavors, few hints of nuts. The overall feeling is very creamy, the smoke is very thick, very lush and stays on the tongue for a long time. It is almost a creme fraiche kind of taste. On the nose, some pepper notes are very noticeable, but not overwhelming at all. It is very pleasant to retrohale. The strength is at a light level. The overall construction is perfect as expected, good draw, good amount of rich smoke and the ashes are holding on beautifully.
Middle third:
In the second third, the strength increases just a bit, setting the Quai D’Orsay No.54 at light to light-medium range. It is still very pleasant and continuing on the same flavor profile. The pepper recedes a bit, and some bitterness from leather emerges instead, with some hints of coffee as well. Floral notes are also joining the party, which really elevate the smoking experience, and giving the typical Quai D’Orsay kind of blend. It is still very creamy, the finish is long and very easy to retrohale. Beautiful smoke up to this point.
Final third:
In the final third, the No.54 remains very smooth and in the light-medium range. In addition to the rich cedar and the floral flavors, there is some sweetness, reminiscent of orange blossom honey. There is also now some milk coffee towards the end, while there are still hints of nuts and pepper in the background. While it is becoming a bit more intense, it remains very easy to smoke and is not over powerful.
Overall, it is a great Sunday morning smoke, mild to medium at its strongest with some nice and creamy wood flavors.
Smoking time: 40 minutes – 60 minutes
