Appearance:
The Quai D’Orsay Senadores Limited Edition 2019 come in a very elegant lacquered yellow display box which will stand out in the collectors’ humidor. It is a luxury sliding lid box in Quai D’Orsay yellow which keeps 25 flawless cigars of the rare Hermosos No.2 vitola, mainly used previously for the Romeo y Julieta Limited Edition of 2004, and for the future release Partágas Legado.
As expected because it is a Limited Edition release, each cigar is rolled with tobacco that was aged at least 2 years and dressed in a beautiful dark wrapper of colorado-maduro tint (chocolate brown) and there is a secondary Edicion Limitada band in addition to the renewed and very classy Quai D’Orsay band. They are of perfect construction despite looking a bit rustic; the triple cap is spot-on, and they feel smooth to the touch with a fair amount of oil on the surface. The cigars are very well packed all the way, with no soft spot but a good spring when squeezed through the fingers.
Smoking Notes:
Before lighting up
The aromas coming off the wrapper are a mix of cedar, sweet tobacco, potent barnyard, dark chocolate and some nuts. It is very subtle overall and we can’t wait to light up the cigar.
Burn/ Draw
The cold draw reveals some beautiful flavors as well. There is also the dark chocolate, some leather, some floral/grassy elements as well as some aged oak. The draw is on the firm side which is not a bad thing. The Quai D’Orsay Senadores gets to light very easily and the first flavors that hit the palate are wood, notes of toast and some hints of sweet spices.
Initial third:
In the first third, the Quai D’Orsay Senadores offers very interesting and enjoyable flavors. There is a beautiful mix of moist earth, freshly buttered toasted bread and some caramel/meringue like sweetness which contrasts with more bitter floral (tea leaves) and cedar notes. A fair amount of spices is also present, black (pepper and cinnamon mostly) and on the aftertaste some hints of light roasted cocoa and coffee beans. The aftertaste is long and enjoyable. The strength is around mild to medium at this point. The construction of the cigar is amazing: the ash is perfect and holds on forever. The draw remains excellent and the burn as well, which doesn’t require any attention. Plenty of smoke is billowing from the foot and from each draw.
Middle third:
In the middle third, the Quai D’Orsay Senadores evolves beautifully and becomes much richer. The toastiness increases and mixes with the caramel in a perfect combination of flavors. There is still a lot of earth and wood, some delicate cinnamon notes while the cedar is more noticeable. There is also the addition of some leather, roasted cocoa beans (akin to dark chocolate), hay, nuts, and some hints of floral and anise. The feeling in the palate is now drier than in the first third, but the flavors are well balanced with each other, there is a delicate bitterness and saltiness mostly on the retrohale, which completes the overall sweetness which is a mix of toast and honey-like flavor, reminiscent of graham cracker. The body is still well under medium even if it has increased since the opening of the cigar and the Senadores is simply how a Quai D’Orsay should taste. Amazing cigar until now which is helped by a perfect construction: the ash holds on until way past the last third, while the burn is flawless.
Final third:
The last third of the Quai D’Orsay Senadores is spectacular, the toast flavor is still dominant, but there is also even more cedar, leather, earth and dark chocolate. These flavors are balanced with spicy notes of cinnamon, white pepper, and some more bitter notes of barnyard and the more noticeable hay. There are also some notes of citrus, coffee and graham cracker. The strength went up a little bit since the middle of the cigar and is reaching the medium mark. The burn and ash are still great while the draw remains amazing until we have to put the nub down.
In short, despite being a young cigar with some hints of bitterness, the Quai D’Orsay Senadores is an amazing cigar ready to smoke out of the box and which will only get better after some aging.
