Appearance:
The Ramon Allones No.2 Limited Edition 2019 comes in a luxury box which has a totally different style than other Habanos. The wooden box is covered in a beautiful dark green lacquer, of the same tone as the Ramon Allones brand. The box shape is unusual but very elegant with a raised middle section adorned with the Ramon Allones logo and the name of the cigar in golden letter. The Ramon Allones No.2 cigar itself is a beauty: the wrapper is chocolate color (a 70% or 80% dark chocolate) of Colorado grade, and it is overall very oily. The wrapper is not the smoothest because it has few veins but it is beautifully crafted. The torcedor really showed its talent on the triple cap at the head of the cigar. The head is perfect and there does not seem to be any soft spot on the cigar. It is evenly packed. The vitola is Campana, similar to the Bolivar Belicosos Finos, which is one of the most famous in Cuba and one of the best to smoke as its length to ring gauge ratio allows the flavors to really show their true potential.
Smoking Notes:
Before lighting up
At cold, the wrapper emits powerful aromas of dark chocolate. We can’t wait to light it up as this cigar was rolled with aged tobacco (aged 3 years minimum), we are expecting a beautiful bouquet of deep Cuban flavors.
Burn/ Draw
Once the head is cut clean, the Ramon Allones No.2 immediately reveals a good draw, on the easy side. Once lit, the iconic richness of the Ramon Allones shows up instantly. Plenty of smooth flavors reach the palate. It is obviously a young cigar, there are some notes of young tobacco, but it is delicious nevertheless.
Initial third:
After the first few draws, one can really experience the aged tobacco which was used to roll the Ramon Allones No.2: there is so much richness already, especially on the retrohale. There are of course some notes of grassiness, signs of a young cigar, but there is plenty of creaminess, rich leather and an underlying sweetness. One wouldn’t expect a sweet cigar from Ramon Allones, but the age tobacco is certainly a factor here. There are also some powerful notes of dark espresso, hints of berries and also some ammonia here and there, which is the sign of a great cigar in the making. After a few years of aging, the cigar will not show any sign of bitterness anymore, but plenty of cream, leather and other typical Cuban flavors. Strength-wise, the No.2 is sitting at a medium body so far, but it is obvious that the strength will pick-up as the cigar goes along. In terms of construction, the cigar smokes flawlessly, plenty of smoke and the ash is holding on very well for at least half of the cigar.
Middle third:
In the second third, the Ramon Allones No.2 continues on being delicious, it is even richer, the flavors are at hitting the full mark. There is some evolution on the palate as well, hard to pin-point the flavors as they are ever changing: some fruity notes then some chocolate notes, raisins, black cherries, some nuttiness and earthiness. There is no dominant flavor, the flavors are well balanced and delighting the palate. It is a superb cigar so far, very smooth and complex despite its young age. One can only imagine how good it will evolve over time. Construction wise, the ash finally falls down around the halfway point and the power ramps up towards the medium to full mark.
Final third:
In the final third, the No.2 evolves slightly by steps and so does the strength which hits the full mark towards the end of the cigar. The flavor profile is still fantastic and smooth. It is a pleasure to retrohale this stogie. The notes of dark espresso and chocolate are still around up to the very end. It is such a delight up to the nub.
In summary: the Ramon Allones No.2 is already an amazing smoke right out of the box and you surely want to order 2 boxes, one to smoke right away and one to keep away for 3 to 5 years.
Smoking time:
1 hour – 1 hour 30 minutes
