Appearance:
The Churchill Anejados comes in their historical grey aluminium tubes in which the cigars were aged for about 12 years. They are placed in their original dress box from 2007, but this box is enclosed in an elegant brown protective case that protects and embellishes the vintage box. Once we open the tube, the Romeo y Julieta Churchill looks simply gorgeous. The wrapper has a beautiful dark brown color, just under coronado maduro shade, it is fairly shiny and oily. It is silky smooth with virtually no veins, only very thin ones are visible. It seems of amazing construction already. In addition to the regular Romeo y Julieta band, there is also a second Aged (“Añejados”) band on the wrapper.
Smoking Notes:
Before lighting up
The aroma from the tube is clearly from a mature cigar. The aromas coming from the wrapper are very delicate and woodsy.
Burn/ Draw
The draw is good and effortless. There is some noticeable cedar in the cold draw. After putting the foot to the flame, the Romeo Churchill generates plenty of smoke, without any bitterness or sharpness. The smoke is very creamy, with some notes of roasted almonds and coconut.
Initial third:
The Romeo y Julieta Churchill Anejados starts off with plenty of dry coconut flavor and few notes of vanilla. There is also some sweetness in it, notes of gingerbread. It is a very pleasant cigar and it is really showing its age by being mellowed and creamy. The ash is stacking beautifully at the foot and has a nice dark grey shade. The strength is at a medium level.
Middle third:
In the second third, the vanilla is even more pronounced, as does the gingerbread. However, the sweetness slowly vanishes and instead some rich cedary and earthy flavors are dominant in the middle of the cigar. There is still some coconut desiccant. And the body is still around the middle mark.
Final third:
In the final third, the flavors shift to darker tones, with even more earth, more tobacco and some hints of humus and of mushroom. The strength also ramped-up a bit and is at the medium-full level. There are notes of black pepper towards the end, but nothing over powering.
Overall, this is a great aged cigar, mellow and flavorful. Due to its massive size, it is ideal as a long afternoon smoke.
Smoking time: 1 hour 45 min - 2 hours 15 minutes
