It then really became popular under the marketing efforts of its new owner, José “Pepin” Rodriguez Fernandez, which acquired the company at the beginning of the 20th century. Pepin notably promoted the brand through horse racing events in Europe and the Americas, by entering his own horse under name of “Julieta”.

Its most famous aficionado was surely Sir Winston Churchill, which gave its name to several Romeo y Julieta cigars and to the classic “Churchill” cigar, a massive 7 by 47 ring gauge cigar. There is also a Dominican Romeo y Julieta cigar brand that was started after the Cuban revolution. However, the original brand is Cuban Romeo y Julieta that is mentioned here.
