The Linea de Oro Hidalgos cigars come in a box that is really refined and stands out from the usual Habanos boxes. It is a wooden cabinet, crafted in sycamore, painted in red-brown color and with a high gloss lacquer finish. A golden medallion depicting the famous Romeo and Juliet balcony scene is also depicted on top of the humidor. The lower edge of the lid is also painted in gold. The box reflects the high quality and attention that Habanos dedicated to this new top-end of the Romeo and Julieta line. The cigars are impeccable and are as close to perfection as possible. Each cigar is embellished by a golden foot band which underlines the special status of these cigars. The cigar band is also different from the regular Romeo y Julieta brand, this band is much larger and in full gold color. The band bears the brand logo as well as the words “Linea de Oro” and the name of the vitola. This vitola is called Hidalgos, and is comparable to a Robusto, with a massive ring gauge of 57 and is 125 millimeter long. This cigar has one of the thickest ring gauge among any Habanos and it is actually the largest cepo in the standard production catalog. The Hidalgos are rolled with tobacco entirely grown in the Cuban premium region, Vuelta Abajo. Each cigar is extremely well rolled, with a perfect triple cap and no apparent vein on the Colorado wrappers.

Before lighting up

The cigar emits some barnyard-like aromas. The cold draw is easy, but not too open neither.

Burn/ Draw

Lighting up the cigar is effortless, the first puff is very enjoyable and fairly strong in the palate. The Hidalgos is pretty punchy right away.

Initial third:

In the first third, the Romeo y Julieta Hidalgos is beautiful and fairly complex despite its young age. Among others, there is some light spice (cinnamon), earthiness, leather, some light wood flavors, but not cedar. There are also some faint notes of roasted coffee and of cocoa. A very positive trait up to this point is the lack of bitterness, which are usually noticeable in young cigars. The construction is also impeccable, the burn line is sharp and straight. The ash creates beautiful dark marbled circles at the end of the cigar and it is holding on strongly. The smoke is very light and delicate, very airy. It is also creamy. The strength is above medium so it is nice to pair with a beverage such as some black tea to balance the strong tobacco flavor.

Middle third:

During the middle third, the flavors develop nicely, the wood notes are still predominant while there is now some addition of some floral notes. The spices are also still present on the retrohale while the cigar became a bit calmer in terms of strength. The finish is short but the cigar becomes smoother and rounder, which allows one to enjoy the complex flavors much more. The Hidalgo is an elegant smoke. The construction remains excellent, the ash still on hold at the end of the second third, while the draw remains amazing.

Final third:

In the final third, the Romeo y Julieta Hidalgos is spectacular. The flavors are amazing and complex, strong leather being the predominant flavor, the cinnamon has almost completely vanished, while the wood notes are still very enjoyable. The overall feel is very creamy in the palate despite the fact that the strength went up a notch, almost reaching the full mark. It is a cigar that pairs very well with a black coffee or a glass of liquor. The overall construction remains spot-on, the ash has finally fallen when reaching the first of the two bands and revealed a perfect burn cone. The burn only required one touch-up in 1 hour plus of smoking time.

In summary: Romeo y Julieta Hidalgos is an amazing Habano, one of the best among the cigars released in the past couple of years.
