Appearance:
Inspecting the Centrogordo, one can only be impressed. These cigars boast impeccable construction and sport a gorgeous wrapper. The rich, dark hue of these cigars is truly striking, reminiscent of the Nub 460 Cameroon, albeit with a more refined band. They exude a smoother, glossier appearance compared to many other Cuban cigars. Presented in a cellophane bundle, they embody a commendable offering from Cuba in terms of construction. The wrapper exhibits a matte, almost velvety, Colorado claro shade, delicate in appearance with a subtle texture and fine veins. The cigar feels firm to the touch, devoid of any soft spots or uneven packing. Its feels very good between the fingers.
Smoking Notes:
Before lighting up
Upon unwrapping the cellophane, a captivating, inviting aroma of warm tobacco greets the senses - simply fantastic! The robustness of the tobacco is palpable even just by the scent alone. The aroma of Vegueros Centrogordo is amazing; it's bold, earthy, and utterly delightful. As for the cold draw, it is pretty muted, with mostly the sweet essence of fermented tobacco. Not a thing to complain about.
Burn/ Draw
After a clean cut, in comparison to Cuban standards, it exhibits an optimal resistance, and the burn remains consistently even throughout.
Initial third:
The Vegueros Centrogordo cigar offers a smooth and creamy smoking experience, reminiscent of custard cream biscuits and childhood milk candies. It starts with mild strength and body, gradually increasing to a medium level. Flavors include earthy tones with hints of chocolate, evolving into woodier notes as the smoke progresses. Despite a slightly wonky burn initially, it self-corrects, delivering a consistently enjoyable smoking session with a subtle, positive aftertaste. Aromas are rather subtle, grassy, with nuances of nuts, pepper, and coffee beans, complemented by a delicate blend of wood on the retrohale. Overall, it's a pleasurable and straightforward cigar experience. The Vegueros Centrogordo cigar exhibits compact ash with white dots, suggesting an aromatic wrapper with oil deposits from the plant. It offers a smooth smoking experience, producing ample smoke, and boasts a breathable rolling. The burn is even, and the ashes maintain appropriate consistency. Overall, it delivers a perfect smoking experience.
Middle third:
In the second third of the Vegueros Centrogordo, the flavor profile initially remains consistent without noticeable changes. However, vegetative notes, including fennel, kale, and rhubarb, emerge, contrasting with the initial creaminess. Midway through, the cigar transitions to earthy and almond flavors that persist until the end. Despite a slight canoeing issue, it self-corrects after a few additional puffs.
Final third:
In the final third of the cigar, the flavor profile becomes varied and somewhat chaotic, featuring notes of custard, kale, black pepper, charred vanilla, and dried apples. Despite the unconventional combination, the experience remains enjoyable. Towards the very end, a surge of jalapeño spiciness becomes noticeable, adding an intense kick to the flavor profile. The smoking session lasts approximately 50 minutes, each minute thoroughly enjoyed.
In summary: allow the Vegueros Centrogordo to rest and age for a couple of years for a more intense tasting experience. Highly recommended for its visual appeal and flavorful journey, it's an ideal choice for those seeking an uncomplicated, high-quality, and affordable Cuban cigar. Recognized as an excellent daily cigar in terms of price and value, it comes highly recommended to all cigar enthusiasts.
