Appearance:

The H.Upmann Propios has a slight rustic look to it, the wrapper looks very good but has some visible veins. However its construction seems excellent as the triple cap is seamless, and as there are no apparent soft spots. The wrapper is a Colorado Maduro, a dark brown wrapper, with a smooth feeling to the touch. In addition to the regular H.Upmann band, the Propios sports the Edicion Limitada 2018 band.

Before lighting up

At cold, the H.Upmann Propios leaves some light tobacco taste on the lips, while some woodsy flavors emanate from the wrapper, and some earthy flavors from the foot.

Burn/ Draw

Once the triple cap has been cut off, the Propios reveals a very good draw, which remains consistent once the cigar is lit. Spices and strength are noticeable in the first draw.

Initial third:

The H.Upmann Propios starts off gently with beautiful typical Cuban flavors, lots of wood, earth, some coffee, some roasted nuts, hints of chocolate and cocoa and a fair amount of spices. The flavor profile is very enjoyable, with some cream and some notes of toast. It has some true H.Upmann characteristics and also shares some of Trinidad’s famous cigars. The body is hovering around the mild-medium to medium mark. The draw is great and the burn line is sharp, each puff releasing a big cloud of white smoke. The ash is of dark gray color and holding very well.

Middle third:

In the middle section of the cigar, the H.Upmann Propios retains its enjoyable flavor mix, with still plenty of wood, some sweet spices as well. There is also the addition of leather, everything is working very well together. The strength is at the medium mark. Great cigar so far, with no flaws at all, the burn is great and so is the draw.

Final third:

In the last third, the H.Upmann Propios continues to smoke beautifully, without any harshness nor bitterness on the aftertaste. The roasted nuts came back while the earthy flavors faded away. It smokes cool enough to be smoked until the nub, the draw remains amazing while the ash still doesn’t fall off when we have to let it go.

In short, the H.Upmann Propios is a great cigar right out of the box thanks to its impeccable construction and its very enjoyable flavor mix.
