The cigar has a rustic appearance, with a substantial weight when held in the hand. However, its allure lies in the stunning, oily wrapper that exudes beauty. Adorned with the familiar standard Montecristo band, it also boasts a custom-made Wide Edmundo band, adding a touch of uniqueness.

This robusto showcases a reddish-brown hue and features a flat head. Its smooth colorado-shaded wrapper adds to its appeal. The construction is impeccable, flawlessly crafted with a firm and tightly packed tobacco.

Smoking Notes:

Before lighting up

Prior to lighting the cigar, delightful aromas of cocoa, hay, and earth greet the senses. It emits the typical Cuban characteristic scents of leather and damp earth. The aroma is reminiscent of cocoa, exuding a pleasant and inviting scent without overpowering the senses.

In the cold draw, we can discern vegetal and grassy notes, further enhancing the anticipation of the smoking experience.

Burn/ Draw

After making a clean cut, the draw proves to be good, even great, albeit slightly firm. Initially, the burn may appear a bit uneven, but it self-corrects within the next few minutes. The puffs yield moderate smoke output, and it's likely that punching the cut would have improved the smoke production even more. Nonetheless, the current draw is satisfying.

As the smoking experience progresses, the cigar maintains its pleasing qualities. It offers delightful nutty and leathery flavors upon ignition, followed by a pleasant interplay of floral and earthy notes.

Initial third:

The cigar opens with woody, sweet, and spicy flavors, along with hints of molasses, vanilla, and almond. It presents a unique and pleasant departure from typical Montecristo cigars. The initial draws are impeccable, offering a citrusy, sweet, earthy, and cedary taste with a delightful spiciness. The leather and subtle sweetness contribute to a promising start. The draw is excellent with perfect resistance, and the cigar's complexity is apparent from the beginning.

It produces ample smoke and holds a great ash, demonstrating its high-quality construction. The experience is likened to a fat robusto with Montecristo flavors, making it a commendable alternative to other popular cigars like the Romeo y Julieta Wide Churchills or the H Upmann 54.

The first third continues with leather and nutty aromas, particularly hazelnut, while introducing wood and sour cream notes, keeping the strength at a medium-light level. There is not a hint of the harshness that you can sometimes find in young cigars.

Middle third:

The Wide Edmundos’s flavors evolve into a rich combination of coffee, leather, spice, rancid, raisins, and toasty notes. A light pepper note also joins the existing profile of hazelnut, wood, and leather. This cigar is a departure from typical Montecristo cigars, offering a brilliant and beautiful mix of flavors, reminiscent of a fusion between a Wide Churchill or Short Churchill and a Partagas. The cedary and smooth notes of the Short Churchill blend with the complex peppery and fruity elements of the Partagas, creating an excellent and satisfying smoking experience.

At the halfway point, the construction is nearly flawless, with a perfect draw providing just the right amount of resistance. The burn is exceptional, leaving no room for complaints. However, what stands out the most is its strength. This cigar is notably stronger than any other Montecristo. It is likened to the potency of heavy Partagas cigars or the old-school Bolivar Belicosos Finos, which were renowned for their robustness.

The draw consistently remained excellent throughout the smoking experience, showcasing earth and leather notes with varying intensities. As the cigar progressed beyond the first half, a delightful fruitiness emerged, distinct from typical citrus or apple flavors. It is more akin to the refreshing taste of a freshly eaten tomato, carrying a subtle acidity that pleasantly tickles the tongue. This unique fruitiness, combined with the earthy and leathery elements, creates a highly enjoyable and satisfying combination of flavors.

Final third:

In the final third of the cigar, the strength slightly increases, providing a satisfactory experience. The finish is intense, showcasing the character of a classic Habano. Towards the end, a salted peanut flavor emerges, adding to the richness of the smoke. The dominant flavors of nuts, wood, and leather persist, accompanied by a balsamic nuance. Despite the progression, the strength remains consistent, delivering a well-rounded and enjoyable smoking session.

As the cigar reaches its end, it is evident that this has been an excellent smoke. The construction is nearly flawless, with a perfect draw and burn, despite the ash being gray. The cigar maintains a consistent flavor profile from beginning to end, with subtle increases in strength and spice towards the midpoint and final third. Despite not tasting like a typical Montecristo cigar, the fusion of flavors from different brands surprisingly works well together, resulting in a highly enjoyable experience.

In summary: The Montecristo Wide Edmundo is a highly satisfying Cuban cigar that resembles the Double Edmundo. Cigar of very good construction and smoking quality. The cigar offers a rich flavor profile that stays true to the Montecristo brand, while exploring other typical Cuban flavors.
