Appearance:
The Por Larranaga Galanes come in a beautiful varnished box of 10 cigars. Each cigar has a pure claro wrapper with a little bit of sheen to it. The wrapper is soft and thin and has a nice light brown color. The construction is pretty much spot on, it feels firm when squeezed but feels also light in the hand. The cigar is perfectly rolled and we expect a good burn.
Smoking Notes:
Before lighting up
At cold, the wrapper gives off aromas of barnyard and tobacco. Despite its young age, there are no traces of ammonia.
Burn/ Draw
After a clean cut, the Por Larranaga Galanes offers a draw on the tight side, but with the perfect amount of resistance, it won’t be a wind tunnel and burn cool. The foot gets alight easily and the first aromas coming off the smoke are smelling of cedar.
Initial third:
The first third is lovely, the cigar is burning perfectly with a razor sharp burn and a beautiful gray ash holding off strongly at the foot. The power is well under medium at this stage and despite being a young cigar, the flavors are rounded without any sharp edges. The flavor profile is very enjoyable, with notes of caramel, vanilla and few notes of white pepper. One can notice that there is plenty of potential in that cigar and in few years time, it should be one of the best Por Larranaga.
Middle third:
In the middle third, the Por Larranaga Galanes, the flavors are still very round and velvety. The sweetness is still around, with plenty of caramel and now with the addition of some vegetal notes. The construction is still impeccable, the burn is immaculate, the ash holds on beautifully. There is still that feeling that all the flavors are there in the background, ready to pop-up once the cigar matures after a couple of years sitting in the humidor.
Final third:
In the final third, the cigar starts to show some of its youth, by getting a bit hotter. The burn gets a bit wavy, but it manages to self-correct. However, the flavors are still very creamy and velvety. There are now notes of coffee and caramel, reminiscent of a coffee with sweetener. Overall, the cigar is very well balanced and very mellow. Its construction is amazing and should allow it to develop into an amazing cigar in the near future.
In short, a very good cigar right off the truck, which will only get better after 3 to 5 years of aging.
Smoking time:
45 minutes – 1 hour 20 minutes
