Appearance:
The Romeo y Julieta Tacos is the one of the 3 new releases from Habanos in the 2018 Limited Edition, along with the Bolivar Soberanos and the H.Upmann Propios. As expected, in addition to the regular Romeo y Julieta band, it has the elegant Edición Limitada 2018 band. The craftsmanship on the wrapper is excellent, very few apparent veins and a beautiful dark chocolate brown wrapper. The overall look of the Tacos is very pleasant, the balance between the 49 ring gauge and the 6 inches long is reminiscent of an old school kind of smoke. It is actually a vitola (“Taco Imperial”) that is being re-introduced since the 1970’s, and is similar to the Montecristo Dante Limited Edition 2016. The construction of the Romeo y Julieta Tacos seems to be at the same level, it feels very nice between the fingers, the triple cap is flawless and there are no soft spots.
Smoking Notes:
Before lighting up
Right out of the box, the smell from the cigar is very appealing with some hay and wood. The cold draw brings also some hay, and some leather and wood.
Burn/ Draw
The cold draw is perfect, with the right amount of firmness. As soon as the cigar is lit, lots of smoke are coming out from the foot and from each puff.
Initial third:
The Tacos starts off smoothly at a medium strength. The flavors are gentle, with a salty woodiness dominating the palate. There is not much sweetness, but rather some deeper flavors such as humus, and mushrooms. As the first third progresses, the strength also ramps up, going towards a medium-strong level. Here and there some harshness shows up, an expected sign of the young age from this cigar. However, overall the experience is very nice, as demonstrated by the perfect construction of the cigar. The ash is developing nicely at the foot and holding on strongly. The burn line is razor sharp since the beginning.
Middle third:
In the second third, the Romeo y Julieta Tacos gets more complex and offers some more vegetal flavors, along with some coffee beans and more intense mushroom flavors. Some notes of chocolate and of green peppers are also noticeable. The body is still a the medium to full mark, and each puff is releasing a thick smoke now. The overall mouth feeling is creamier, with some milk like flavors coating the palate.
Final third:
The Taco remains very pleasant despite its young age until the end, the flavor profile remains similar but also offers more leather and more wood. The cream is still present as well. No issues at all with the draw or the burn, it is perfectly rolled and should only get better with some aging.
Overall, a cigar that is very well constructed and very enjoyable even at its young age, but should only benefit for 2 to 5 years of aging.
Smoking time: 1 hour – 1 hour 30 minutes
