Appearance:
The Vegueros Mananitas looks very nice, offering a smooth and pretty oily wrapper with a nice Colorado claro color (medium brown). The wrapper is virtually veinless, except for one or two small fine veins. The cigar seems very well rolled, tightly packed from the head to the foot. There are no apparent soft spots, it feels firm in hand. It is a short cigar but it is very well constructed. The seams are almost invisible; the cap is very nicely applied. The band has also been updated to a more modern look; the green logo looks sharp on the brown wrapper.
Smoking Notes:
Before lighting up
Upon opening the tin box, barnyard flavors come out the cigars. At cold, rich herbal aromas, barnyard and sweet tobacco notes emanate from the foot. After clipping the cap, the cigar reveals a smooth draw, which leaves lots of honey on the palate.
Burn/ Draw
The draw remains smooth and easy throughout the whole cigar. The construction of the Vegueros Mananitas is impeccable; the burn line is sharp for most of the smoke, except for one or two touch-ups. At the foot, a beautiful white ash develops and holds on for a while. The cigar generates a thick and smooth smoke all along.
Initial third:
The first third of the cigar start at a mild to medium body, with some beautiful typical Cuban flavors. We get some toasted oats notes, a nice and sweet tobacco flavor, some earthy notes and some green pepper that brings some spiciness. There are also some cedar notes on the nose and on the palate. The finish is long and smooth leaving some toasted tobacco notes on the tongue. There are also some herbal characteristics, some hints of grass and of tea. The strength is slowly building up along the first third.
Middle third:
In the middle third, the Vegueros Mananitas is now at a medium body, the flavors become also stronger. The spicy notes ramp up, there is more green pepper. At the same time, the cedar becomes more powerful. There are also some beautiful toasty flavors coming up, like toasted bread or roasted nuts. The wood and the toastiness remain in the mouth on the finish. The flavors are not too complex, but they are spot on, and work well together. There are also hints of coffee and of a creamy sweetness, almost like custard. The burn and the draw remain very good; this is a beautiful middle section.
Final third:
In the final third, the flavor profile evolves once again; some grassy notes from the first third come back. The last third is still very creamy, but the custard notes have left. The green pepper is now very pronounced, but it is not harsh or too spicy. However, the strength has increased again, and it is more a medium to full body. There are still ample woodsy flavors, some coffee notes and now some earthy notes. The burn allows you to smoke it until the nub.
In summary, the Vegueros Mananitas is a great short smoke, which a perfect construction, not too strong; a perfect first smoke for a beginner or an afternoon break.
