Appearance:
The Saint Luis Rey Pura Vida is a beautiful cigar, a vitola called Magnum 54 which is the same as the H.Upmann Magnum 54, or the Ramon Allones Nuevo Mundo, another Costa Rica Regional Edition (a robusto of 54 ring gauge by 150 mm). The wrapper chosen for this cigar is a veinless and spotless leaf grown in the Vuelta Abajo region, of Claro to Colorado-Claro color. The cigar has a nice oily sheen on the surface and feels well packed all along, with no apparent soft spots.
Smoking Notes:
Before lighting up
The cold draw is good and some enjoyable flavors of tobacco.
Burn/ Draw
Once cut, the Pura Vida gets to light very easily and gives off some toasted flavors, with a good amount of punch. It is pretty rich from the get-go. There are also notes of wood and the strength is at the medium level at this point.
Initial third:
In the first third, the Saint Luis Rey Pura Vida offers very rich and enjoyable flavors. There is some sweetness, toastiness as well as some spices. The burn is amazing, the burn line is sharp and even, while the ash builds up nicely at the foot in very regular gray circles. The strength is at medium.
Middle third:
In the middle third, the Pura Vida becomes very woody and still offers toasted flavors. The smoking evolution is very good, thanks to the premium tobacco used to roll this cigar. The strength is still around medium up to that point.
Final third:
The final third offers a good evolution, with rich flavors on the palate and a small increase in strength, the Saint Luis Rey Pura Vida being just about medium-full in the final 20 minutes.
In short, the Saint Luis Rey Pura Vida is very enjoyable and will surely improve with time and should be on par with the revered Saint Luis Rey Serie A’s.
Smoking time:
60 minutes – 1 hour 30 minutes
