Cuban Cigars

The Juan Lopez Seleccion No.1 is a rich and tasty medium Habanos of Grand Corona format, 5.6” (143mm) long, of 46 ring gauge, and comes in a 25 cigars box. The Juan Lopez brand is one the oldest founded in Cuba, in 1876. Released in 1990s, it is fully hand-made with Vuelta Abajo filler leaves. It can be sometimes hard to find, as the production can be interrupted at times, due to high quality standards. It is a Corona Gorda format, an extraordinary compromise between a Churchill, a Hermoso No.4 and a Corona. It is full of flavors; the aromas are well balanced between woodsy, earthy, sweet and peppery aromas and some creaminess to bind it all. The texture of the Juan Lopez Seleccion No.1 is amazing, generates lots of creamy smoke and an amazing taste. It can be both enjoyed young and fresh or with some more age and would delight both the beginner and the cigar aficionado. In short, a very impressive smoke by a lesson-known Cuban brand. The Hoyo de Monterrey Palmas Extra is a delicious and affordable medium Habano, with a 40 ring gauge, 5.5” (140mm) long and comes in a box of 25 cigars. A very nice Corona, that has a strong woodsy flavor, coupled with a subtle spiciness. The Hoyo du Maire is part of Le Hoyo Series and is of Small Panetela/Entreactos format, 30 ring gauge and 3.9 inches (100mm) in length. This cigar is part of the Le Hoyo series, a special series made for a Swiss distributor in the years 1940's and, as the cigars from this series, is pretty different than other Hoyo de Monterrey. The Hoyo du Maire, is a medium to full flavored cigar, with tobacco and wood as main flavors. There are also lots of toasted aromas, and notes of leather, cream and a bit of tea notes. Despite being a pretty short smoke, not more than half an hour, but still manages to provide the typical Cuban "twang" with a lot of complexity, while never being over powerful. The Hoyo de San Juan from Hoyo de Monterrey is a tasty Habano, of Geniales format, of 54 ring gauge and 5.9” (150mm) long and comes in a 10 cigars cabinet. Released at the 2014 Habanos Festival, this big ring gauge cigar is reminiscent of the old brand, but with a modern twist that appeal to many big ring gauges aficionados. It sports a new band which reads “Serie Le Hoyo” but as any Hoyo de Monterrey, it is hand rolled only using tobacco from San Juan y Martínez district, where the brand was born in 1865. It is of light to medium flavor, very aromatic and rich smoke. One of the best Hoyo out there. Has a great potential for aging, which would make it even smoother. En savoir plus

The Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure de Luxe LCDH is a light yet rich Magico, 4.5” (115mm) long, of 52 ring gauge, and comes in a 10 cigars box. In 2012 Hoyo de Monterrey, one of the oldest Habanos brand, decided to launch an exclusive line for La casa del Habano, and released the Epicure de Luxe. It is only using tobacco from the most valuable area in Cuba, the famous Vuelta Abajo. This smoke packs all the typical Hoyo de Monterrey’s flavours into a small yet exclusive cigar, that is comparable to the 2012 Limited Editions, but which is cheaper than these. The construction is superb, it is fully handmade, its high level of quality is on par with any cigar out of La Casa del Habanos. On the flavor profile, it is rather light in taste yet shows a great level of complexity and control of aromas. The H.Upmann Royal Robustos is a medium Edmundo, a La Casa Del Habano exclusivity, 5.3” (135mm) long, of 52 ring gauge, and comes in a 10 cigars box. Released in limited quantities in 2011, in front of its great success, the production of this little jewel continued since 2012. This is cigar is hand-rolled by La Casa Del Habanos for H Upmann, and is using only long filler and tobacco leaves from the Vuelta Abajo zone in the Pinar del Rio region in Cuba. The cigar has a beautiful construction, smokes very well. Not a very strong cigar, nor very complex, it is medium bodied, and offers great Cuban flavors: coffee, earth, hay and lots of cedar. This cigar is also quite spicy, which makes it a great everyday cigar. It also has a great potential for aging, 2 or 3 years are recommended. En savoir plus

The H.Upmann Regalias is a great morning Habano, a light-medium Petit Corona, 5.1” (129mm) long, of 42 ring gauge, and comes in a 25 cigars box. It has a nice construction and burns very well. It is a perfect cigar for a morning smoke, or an afternoon smoke, that can appeal both to seasoned smokers and newcomers to Habanos. The cigar has a nice complexity of flavors, toasty tobacco, cedar, coffee, sweetness of honey, some spices, some leather and some floral note. The constant creaminess of the cigar makes it one of the best Petit Corona out of Cuba. Fully handmade, it is also a cigar that has a great potential for aging, which would allow the aromas to open even more. En savoir plus

The H.Upmann No.2 is one of Cuba's most popular vitola, a delicious medium Pyramid, 6.1” (156mm) long, of 52 ring gauge, and comes in a 25 cigars box. It is right up there with the Montecristo No.2. However the flavors are very recognizable as H.Upmann, but the pointy shape of this cigar gives a smoke that is unique in this brand. Very clean taste, no harshness, and medium body give for a perfectly rounded smoke. A cigar that will become even more popular with time. A Pre-1960 release. En savoir plus
