The Hoyo de Monterrey Primaveras is a 2021 special release Habano, a 6.62” (167mm) by 48 ring gauge, and comes in a luxury box of 18 cigars. It is celebrating the Chinese zodiac calendar, 2021 being the year of the Ox, which brings prosperity and wellness. The number 8 is considered a lucky number in the Chinese culture and it is pronounced ‘Fa’ which can be translated to ‘well off’ and ‘getting rich in a short time’. Presented virtually by the Habanos distributor for the Southeast Asia region, the 18 cigars come in an elegant enameled red and gold box, with the words “Year of the Ox” printed on the lid. The cigar is a Grand Corona, or more precisely a vitola de galera called Hermosos No. 1, which was previously used for the Montecristo Dantés Edición Limitada 2016, the Romeo y Julieta Hermosos No. 1 Edición Limitada 2003 and a La Casa del Habano exclusive release, the San Cristobal Mercaderes. Like all Hoyo de Monterrey cigars, it is medium in strength, so it shouldn’t be paired with something too strong, but is a great morning cigar which should only get better with some ageing. The Jose L. Piedra Petit Caballeros is an amazing Corona Extra, 4.75” by 48, rolled with short-filler and comes in a pack of 15 cigars. Released in 2020, it is the latest release from the Jose L. Piedra brand before the planned makeover of the brand by Habanos. The vitola used for this cigar is called Hermoso Especial, only used before for the 2017 Punch Regios de Punch Edición Limitada. Its rather simple flavor profile is dominated by cedar, pepper and peanuts, and its perfect construction makes it the ideal cigar for an outdoor activity or when you cannot focus too much on the flavors. The Juan Lopez Petit Coronas is a rich and smooth medium Habanos of Petit Corona format, 5.1” (129mm) long, of 42 ring gauge, and comes in a 25 cigars box. It’s neither the most famous Petit Coronas from Habanos SA for sure, nor the prettiest looking. However, it is a very affordable stogie that is very pleasant to smoke. It is a smoke that offers typical Cuban flavors, wood, tobacco, strong leather, earthy tones, coupled with lots of soft spices and notes of cocoa, honey, nuts and hay. Thanks to its amazing construction, the draw is perfect all along; the burn line is sharp and generates a good amount of smoke. Great first smoke for any beginner, but will also please experienced smokers. Ageing recommended of 2 to 3 years. En savoir plus

The Juan Lopez Seleccion No.1 is a rich and tasty medium Habanos of Grand Corona format, 5.6” (143mm) long, of 46 ring gauge, and comes in a 25 cigars box. The Juan Lopez brand is one the oldest founded in Cuba, in 1876. Released in 1990s, it is fully hand-made with Vuelta Abajo filler leaves. It can be sometimes hard to find, as the production can be interrupted at times, due to high quality standards. It is a Corona Gorda format, an extraordinary compromise between a Churchill, a Hermoso No.4 and a Corona. It is full of flavors; the aromas are well balanced between woodsy, earthy, sweet and peppery aromas and some creaminess to bind it all. The texture of the Juan Lopez Seleccion No.1 is amazing, generates lots of creamy smoke and an amazing taste. It can be both enjoyed young and fresh or with some more age and would delight both the beginner and the cigar aficionado. In short, a very impressive smoke by a lesson-known Cuban brand.
