Giant Robusto
Appearance:
As it is the tradition in the Colección Habanos series, the box of Hoyo de Monterrey Maravillas is book-shaped and contains 20 cigars, it is a piece of art in itself. Only 2,000 boxes were produced in Cuba and each box is numbered. Announced in 2015, it only reached the shelves in 2016. The cigar itself is visually a big cigar, its vitola is called a Giant Robusto (similar to the Montecristo A), the ring gauge is 55 while the Hoyo de Monterrey Maravillas is 9 inches long (23.3 cm). It is such a massive cigar that it is reminiscent of the cigars drawn in a cartoon or similar to those that old ladies smoke in the streets of Havana. However, its construction looks spot on, the cap is beautiful, the wrapper is of uniform medium-brown color (Colorado Claro), fairly oily. The veins are not too obvious and the cigar feels firm in hand with just a bit of give when squeezed between the fingers. Overall, it looks perfectly packed all the way and its special band complements the Maravillas beautifully. The band is the one usually used for heavy ring cigars. A beautiful white and red band with words embossed in golden color.
Smoking Notes:
Before lighting up
Off the foot, there are some peppery aromas as well as some white bread notes and some general sweetness.
Burn/ Draw
The draw is rather firm but good enough to enjoy some tobacco flavors, as well as some nuts on the cold draw.
Initial third:
The opening of the Hoyo de Monterrey Maravillas is beautiful, much like any Hoyo de Monterrey, it is smooth and soft, but this particular cigar is even more well-rounded. There is a lot of cream in the cigar as well as plenty of nuts (peanuts mostly). To balance the creaminess, there is a good amount of pepper notes, mostly black pepper. Some char notes creep up towards the middle of the first third, while the nuttiness also becomes more prominent. The flavors are a nice mix of almond cream and barbecue. The strength is about medium throughout the whole first third. The Maravillas smokes beautifully, emitting plenty of smoke and the burn is flawless.
Middle third:
In the middle third, the flavor profile of the Hoyo de Monterrey Maravillas evolves into a more complex cigar. There is now some potent wood, which is very enjoyable, and still plenty of char and campfire notes. There are also some hints of barnyard, while the cream and almonds are less noticeable until we reach the end of the second third. The pepperiness comes and goes all throughout the middle section of the cigar. The burn is still flawless, the draw is just a bit tighter but not posing any issues while the ash seems to be able to hold until the nub. The strength is now sitting right at the medium-to-full mark.
Final third:
In the final third the Hoyo de Monterrey Maravillas continues on being this exceptional cigar. The construction is flawless, the burn doesn’t require any attention as it self-corrects whenever the burn line becomes wavy. The draw remains amazing until the nub. Flavor-wise, the cigar becomes more powerful with even more wood, while the char and black pepper notes increase towards the very end of the cigar. Strength-wise, the Hoyo de Monterrey Maravillas is just under the full mark by the end.
In summary: the Hoyo de Monterrey Maravillas is ready to smoke and deserves the attention of any aficionado who enjoys large cigars
