Appearance:
The Hoyo de Monterrey Primaveras is a very good looking cigar. In addition to the standard band, there is a special Year of the Ox footband in red and golden colors. The cigar is very well rolled, the cigar feels well packed with no soft spots. The wrapper has a very nice dark brown color, not quite Colorado Maduro color, but pretty dark when compared to the usual Habano. The wrapper has a little tooth to it, with very fine visible veins but the construction is amazing. Once removed, the foot band reveals a pristine foot, very well packed.
Smoking Notes:
Before lighting up
At cold, there are mild aroma of wood, moist tobacco and sawdust coming from the wrapper.
Burn/ Draw
The cold draw is good, slightly tight, but open enough to offer some notes of coffee and some salted leather. Once lit, the draw opens up slightly and is simply spot-on. The cigar burns cool and the burn line isn’t perfect but self corrects, so it is nothing to worry about. At the foot, the ash holds on strongly and has a beautiful silver-gray color.
Initial third:
The Hoyo de Monterrey Primaveras opens up with plenty of leather and some coffee and honey. It is typically Cuban so far and it is beautiful. Further on, some herbal and fruit notes also join the flavor profile, we pick up some kind of dried flower flavor. We can notice some dried stone fruit, like apricot or peach. A fair amount of pepper is also making its way through, with notes of green chili. The power is light so far, way under the medium mark, mild to medium at most. The draw is fairly tight, but it still allows plenty of smoke to go through at each puff.
Middle third:
By the middle section of the cigar, the flavor profile has become a bit more sweet. There is plenty of Cuban leather, some moist ground notes, roasted coffee and also some pepper red pepper, especially on the retrohale. But the most noticeable evolution is that there is much more sweetness now, with the addition of some notes similar to honey. In addition to these Cuban flavors, there are also flavors of wood, but not cedar and still some dried apricot. The flavors are well rounded and blend beautifully in the palate. There is no overpowering flavor and the strength has increased a bit towards the medium mark. The cigar burns cool and the draw has opened up ever so slightly so it is just perfect. The burn line is sharp and the ash holds on strong at the end while each draw creates plenty of white creamy smoke.
Final third:
Coming to the final third, the cigar becomes more peppery, while the dried stone fruit sweetness decreases but it is still fairly sweet. The Hoyo de Monterrey Primaveras is very enjoyable and the flavors are well balanced. There is also the addition of some herbal notes, which brings some freshness to the final third. The strength is slightly stronger towards the end, just above the medium mark. Great burn until the very end, we almost burn our fingers when we need to put it down in the ashtray.
In summary, the Hoyo de Monterrey Primaveras is a great morning cigar or to pair with some light soft drink in order to enjoy all its beautiful flavors.
