Appearance:
The Hoyo de Monterrey Souvenir de Luxe comes in an aluminium tin of 5 cigars and is part of the Línea Retro cigar, which joins previous editions such as Romeo y Julieta "Club Kings", Partagas. The Línea Retro editions stand out for their packaging in metal boxes, inspired by the renowned pocket cigar holders from the 1970s. The case is quite appealing, actually. It closely resembles the ones sold in the 1970s. It's a compact tin, perfect for these shorter cigars.
Smoking Notes:
Before lighting up
The wrapper emits classic Cuban cigar aromas, primarily cedar, hay, and tobacco.
Burn/ Draw
When lighting up, there's an immediate creamy cedar flavor with a hint of fruity notes, which is quite enjoyable. The cigar overall is good, with a pleasant fruity and cedary profile, accompanied by creamy undertones. There's no spice present; instead, the flavors are perfectly balanced. It's a very smooth cigar, albeit lighter in strength compared to the typical Hoyo de Monterrey.
Initial third:
Approaching the end of the first third, the cigar remains very light, with a pleasant creaminess and fruity undertones. The cedar notes are present, without any spiciness; the combination of cedar and cream is quite satisfying. It falls on the lighter end of the Hoyo de Monterrey spectrum. Additionally, there might be a hint of grass or hay. While the range of flavors isn't extensive thus far, it remains enjoyable and of good quality.
Middle third:
Approaching the end of the second third, a subtle hint of caramel emerges, enhancing the already creamy profile. Cedar notes persist, accompanied by a lingering fruitiness. The burn remains consistent without requiring any touch-ups, and the wrapper maintains its high quality. This cigar undeniably falls on the lighter side; it doesn't even verge toward medium-bodied—it's distinctly light. While the flavors have transitioned slightly, they largely remain unchanged, albeit with the recent addition of caramel notes.
Final third:
Approaching the conclusion of this cigar has truly been a delight. While the flavor has slightly intensified towards the end, it still maintains its light character. Throughout the smoke, a subtle fruity undertone persists in the background, adding to its pleasantness. The second third introduced a touch of caramel that persists into the final third. The cedar and hay notes fluctuate, contributing to its overall appeal. Cedar remains prominent and the creaminess is consistently enjoyable. Any spice present is minimal, perhaps a mere 1 out of 10, and even on the retro hale, it's agreeable. Overall, this cigar is simply excellent, with a consistently good burn. There's a hint of pepper, but it's subtle, blending seamlessly with the other flavors. It's smooth, creamy, and immensely enjoyable, suitable for pairing with virtually anything.
In summary, this cigar demonstrates exceptional quality. There are no discernible flaws, making it suitable for virtually any smoker to enjoy.
