Appearance:
The Por Larranaga Gran Robusto is a very elegant cigar, 6.3 inches long by 50 ring gauge, the vitola is also called Magnum 50. The wrapper has a beautiful chocolate color with a nice oily sheen on it. Few veins are visible but the overall construction is impeccable and it is well packed but not overly firm. The cigar sports the usual band and an extra band specific to this Regional Edition for the Netherlands which reads “Exclusivo Paises Bajos”.
Smoking Notes:
Before lighting up
At cold, the wrapper emits some mixture of fresh hay, leather, chocolate and cedar.
Burn/ Draw
Before lighting up the cigar, the draw gives some sweetness, from spices and wood, some hay, citrus, humus and bitter chocolate. Toasting the foot is easy and the Gran Corona gets to light effortlessly. The draw is great and smooth, and it brings some wood with some sweet chocolate in the aftertaste.
Initial third:
The main flavors of the Por Larranaga Gran Corona come to the forefront right away, a mix of rich cedar and smooth hay. The overall feeling in the palate is smooth, but the flavor profile is actually rich, there is some spiciness from pepper and cinnamon, some bitterness of cocoa bean and leather. On the retrohale, the hint of sweet citrus fruit (mostly orange) is getting more noticeable as the cigar progresses towards the end of the first third. When it comes to the construction of the cigar, nothing to complain about: the burn is straight and doesn’t require attention, the draw remains very good and a thick white smoke billows from the foot of the Gran Corona. Strength-wise, it started at a mild to medium level and it is now slowly creeping up to the medium level towards the middle third.
Middle third:
In the second third, the main flavors remain the same, so plenty of cedar and creamy hay. The orange sweetness on the retrohale continue to gain in intensity. At this stage, the Gran Corona starts showing its complexity, in the background there is an explosion of flavors: sweet spices mix with some roasted nuts, leather, bitter chocolate, smooth earthy tones, and some hints of flowers. The flavors are well balanced with some spicy bursts here or there to keep you on your toes. The overall strength is right in the medium range, and the construction remains spot-on, while the smoke production is still generous.
Final third:
In the final third, the flavor profile remains similar with lots of wood and dry grass notes, earthy flavors are more prominent as well. There are still a fair amount of spices and fruit notes. The overall construction remains perfect, still plenty of smoke and an awesome draw. The Gran Corona never gets too harsh and remains in the medium level in terms of strength.
In summary, a medium-bodied cigar that will appeal to both experienced and novice smokers with its complex and well rounded flavor profile.
Smoking time: 1 hour - 1 hour 30 minutes
